$85 Million to paint a stone bridge?

That's right. The Brooklyn bridge structure is made of stone and hence does not need paint. Only the suspension cables and assorted bits are metal and need painting. So why does it cost $85 million to do the job? The NY Sun has more.

FYI, for those of you privileged not to live here in the People's Republic of New York, the Commissioner of the NYC department of Transportation is Iris Weinshall - wife of Senator Schumer. In this letter to the editor in 2006, she tells us "New Yorkers can rest assured that we will continue to do whatever it takes to keep them (bridges) all in good condition." I guess a score of 3 out of 100 is "good condition" (the I-35 bridge had a score of 50 out of 100).
Kommissar Iris was also in charge during the Staten Island Ferry disaster.

At least here in NY, the government and their over-priced union labor is not the solution for our infrastructure.
